150 CUSD Scholars Attend 2026 New Generation Conference
More than 150 newcomer scholars from Centennial, Compton, and Dominguez High Schools participated in Compton Unified School District’s annual New Generation Conference, held at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Hosted by the CUSD’s English Learner Services Department in collaboration with the College & Career Readiness Department and GEAR UP partners at CSUDH and UC Irvine, the conference provided students with a day of learning, exploration, and inspiration focused on their future success.

The event featured a keynote address from Dr. Leslie Chang, a nationally recognized advocate for underserved communities with more than 25 years of experience in education. Throughout her career, Dr. Chang has worked to expand access, opportunity, and belonging for students and families, helping to create pathways for greater economic mobility. She currently serves as Chief of Staff at Mass Insight Education & Research and is also a college professor.

In addition to the keynote, scholars participated in a series of engaging panels and interactive sessions that explored college pathways, career opportunities, and ways to connect with various industries. These experiences were designed to help students better understand their options and envision their futures beyond high school.

The conference also included a student performance by Dominguez High School scholars, senior sash recognitions for graduating students, and a guided tour of the CSUDH campus, offering participants a firsthand look at college life. The day concluded with opportunities for students to connect with peers and mentors in a supportive and welcoming environment.

The New Generation Conference continues to serve as a meaningful experience for newcomer students, equipping them with the knowledge, resources, and inspiration needed to pursue their academic and career goals with confidence.
