650 CUSD Scholars Explore Engineering at Annual Expo

Media Release

More than 650 elementary scholars from Bursch, Clinton, Emerson, King, and Longfellow Elementary Schools recently gathered at Caldwell for Compton Unified School District’s annual Engineering Expo—an engaging day of hands-on learning designed to spark curiosity and introduce scholars to real-world engineering concepts.

Throughout the event, scholars rotated through a variety of interactive stations where they took on engineering challenges such as coding Ozobots and robots, building structures, and flying drones. Each activity encouraged scholars to think critically, collaborate with peers, and apply problem-solving skills while learning about the many ways engineering shapes the world around them.

In a unique twist this year, CUSD scholars played a leading role in the event. Scholars from Clinton, Compton Early College Middle School, Davis, Jefferson, Kennedy, King, Laurel Street, and Whaley Middle Schools operated the activity stations and guided younger scholars through the engineering tasks. Their leadership not only helped create a dynamic learning environment but also showcased the confidence and technical skills Compton Unified scholars develop as they progress through the District’s STEM programs.

The Engineering Expo is part of Compton Unified’s broader commitment to providing strong science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education opportunities for scholars beginning in the earliest grades. Across the District, scholars have access to hands-on STEM experiences that encourage creativity, innovation, and exploration.

The impact of these efforts is already clear. More than 50 percent of Compton Unified scholars report that they are interested in pursuing careers in STEM-related fields, reflecting the District’s success in preparing the next generation of engineers, scientists, and technology leaders.

Through events like the Engineering Expo, Compton Unified continues to provide scholars with meaningful opportunities to explore their interests, build new skills, and imagine the possibilities of their future careers.
