NBA Superstar DeMar DeRozan Inspires Compton High Scholars
Scholars at Compton High School received a special visit recently when NBA star and Compton native DeMar DeRozan returned to his alma mater for an inspiring afternoon with the Tarbabe boys and girls basketball teams.
Now a standout guard for the Sacramento Kings, DeRozan came back to his hometown as part of the Nike Training Friday Night Lift Club, giving scholar-athletes a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the NBA’s respected veterans.

During an engaging Q&A session, DeRozan spoke candidly about the dedication required to reach the highest level of basketball. He emphasized the discipline, sacrifice, and relentless work ethic needed to succeed—especially the effort put in during the unseen hours when no one else is watching.

“It’s the work you put in when nobody’s around that really separates you,” DeRozan shared, encouraging scholars to stay focused on their goals both on and off the court.

DeRozan didn’t just offer advice—he showed his support by spending time with the teams as professional Nike trainers Kat Novoa and Jason Estrada led scholars through an intense strength and conditioning workout. The session challenged the student-athletes while reinforcing the training mindset needed to compete at the highest level.

To make the visit even more memorable, every scholar received new Nike shoes and gear, a surprise that brought excitement and appreciation from the Tarbabe athletes.

For many students, the visit carried special meaning. DeRozan’s journey—from growing up in Compton to becoming an NBA superstar—serves as a powerful example of what is possible with hard work, determination, and pride in one’s community.

From Compton to the NBA and back again, DeRozan’s return highlighted the importance of giving back and inspiring the next generation of scholar-athletes to chase their dreams.
