Heavy Metal Summer Experience Lets CUSD Scholars Explore Skill Trades

Compton Unified School District scholars recently participated in the Heavy Metal Summer Experience (HMSE), a hands-on, week-long program designed to introduce students to high-demand careers in the skilled trades. The immersive experience provided 20 Chavez, Compton, Dominguez and Marshall High School scholars with direct exposure to construction, manufacturing, and electrical career pathways through real-world training and industry engagement.
The program began with students visiting Southland Industries in Garden Grove, where they received safety training and participated in hands-on industry projects. Throughout the week, scholars built toolboxes using a metal press, completed welding projects, and engaged in pipe-fitting activities under the guidance of experienced professionals. These activities allowed students to develop technical skills while gaining a deeper understanding of workplace expectations in the trades.
Scholars then continued their training at the IBEW/LA Electrical Training Institute in the City of Commerce. There, they participated in electrical trade instruction alongside industry instructors and apprentices. Students gained valuable insight into the electrical field while strengthening critical skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
The program concluded with a graduation ceremony recognizing student achievement and celebrating the successful completion of a transformative week of career exploration and work-based learning.
The HMSE program is part of Compton Unified’s continued expansion of Career Technical Education (CTE) opportunities that connect scholars to high-demand industries. The experience introduces scholars to careers in skilled trades, including electrical work, sheet metal, construction, and manufacturing, while reinforcing the professional expectations required for success in these fields.
Prior to the start of the program, students and families attended an orientation held at Dominguez High School. The event served as the formal launch of HMSE, bringing together scholars, parents, district staff, and industry partners. Families received important information about program expectations, schedules, and safety requirements, while students were recognized for their acceptance into the program and prepared for the week ahead.
The orientation also emphasized the importance of workforce readiness, including professionalism, safety, punctuality, and communication. Students had the opportunity to try on work boots and review safety equipment, ensuring they were fully prepared for the hands-on experience.
By combining practical preparation with inspiration, the HMSE program supports student achievement by equipping scholars with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in real-world work environments. Through direct exposure to industry professionals and career pathways, students begin to see themselves as future electricians, technicians, builders, and entrepreneurs.
