Davis Middle School scholars proudly represented their school and community at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 2026 Conference in Orlando, Florida. Selected to present at two prestigious conference events, the six Davis Tech Team scholars who work with their teacher Mr. Jose Gonzalez, demonstrated the power of innovation, collaboration, and student-centered learning on an international stage.

At the heart of their presentations was the Sustainable Spacecraft Project, an ambitious and forward-thinking prototype designed by scholars using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) tools, Arduino microcontrollers, Micro, and 3D printing. The project was the result of a meaningful international collaboration with scholars from Colegio Militar de Manaus in Brazil, highlighting the importance of global partnerships in solving real-world challenges.

The spacecraft was designed with a mission to travel to Jupiter’s moon, Europa, where scientists believe an ocean exists beneath its icy surface. As part of this exploration concept, scholars engineered remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to investigate the ocean environment upon arrival. The spacecraft also features a prototype aquaponics system designed to grow food sustainably during long-term space travel. Brazilian student collaborators contributed a unique sanitation system utilizing water lettuce, a plant native to the Amazon that is known for its ability to remove toxins from water, demonstrating an innovative approach to sustainability in extreme environments.

Davis scholars were honored to present at two ISTE conference sessions. During “AI + PBL: Designing STEAM Projects that Drive Student Success,” scholars shared their firsthand experiences with Project-Based Learning (PBL), explaining how this instructional approach has strengthened their engagement, critical-thinking skills, and overall academic growth.

During “Global Collaboration Playground: Passport to Social Good,” scholars showcased their projects while engaging with educators and attendees from around the world. They discussed the importance of global collaboration, cultural exchange, and using technology to develop solutions that benefit society.
