The Compton Unified School District (CUSD) Board of Trustees selected its officers for the 2026–2027 school year during its recent July 21 Board of Trustees meeting.

Micah Ali was reelected as Board President, while Michael Hooper was reelected as Vice President and selected to serve as the Los Angeles County School Trustees Representative. Denzell Perry was elected Board Clerk.

Ali has served on the Compton Unified Board of Trustees for 19 years and is the longest-serving Board President in the district's history.

"I am looking forward to another year of driving profound impact and progress on behalf of our students, and I do not take this appointment lightly," said Ali. "The past year has marked another trailblazing chapter for Compton Unified. Together, we celebrated the opening of the state-of-the-art Compton High School, broke ground on the future Centennial High School, and secured our community's trust to launch the next phase of our district's transformation through a historic bond measure that will pave the way for a new Dominguez High School. These milestones prove what is possible when our Board, Superintendent, staff, families, and community unite around a bold, shared vision for our scholars. While we take pride in how far we have come, our mission continues as we pioneer new opportunities and construct an even brighter, limitless future for every Compton Unified scholar."

The Board confirmed the following leadership positions for the 2026–2027 school year:

President: Micah Ali, Trustee Area C Representative

Vice President: Michael Hooper, Trustee Area D Representative

Clerk: Denzell Perry, Trustee Area A Representative

Legislative Representative: Satra Zurita, Trustee Area G Representative

Los Angeles County School Trustees Representative: Michael Hooper, Trustee Area D Representative

Member: Alma Taylor-Pleasant, Trustee Area E Representative

Member: Sandra Moss, Trustee Area F Representative

Member: Tana McCoy, Trustee Area B Representative

The current officers will serve from July 2026 through June 2027.

About the reelection, Hooper said, "I appreciate the confidence my fellow trustees have placed in me. As Vice President and Los Angeles County School Trustees Representative, I look forward to continuing our work together to expand opportunities for every Compton Unified scholar while proudly representing our district across the county."

Perry stated, "Serving as Board Clerk is a responsibility I value deeply, and I thank my fellow trustees for their confidence. I am committed to working collaboratively to promote transparency, accountability, and continued success for the scholars and families of Compton Unified."

Zurita added, "It is an honor to continue serving the families of Compton Unified and to take on the role of Legislative Representative. I will continue advocating for policies that strengthen public education and create even more opportunities for our scholars."

Moss commented, "Our district's momentum is the result of keeping scholars at the center of every decision we make. I am excited to continue working with my fellow trustees as we build on the tremendous progress Compton Unified has achieved."

During the meeting, newly elected Trustee Tana McCoy was sworn in to represent Area B following her victory in the June 2 election. Trustees Alma Taylor-Pleasant (Area E), Satra Zurita (Area G), and Denzell Perry (Area A), who were reelected to their positions on June 2, were sworn in to new four-year terms.

The Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees is composed of seven members, each elected by registered voters within their respective trustee areas. Candidates must reside within the area they seek to represent. Trustees serve staggered four-year terms, with either three or four seats on the ballot every two years. Following each election cycle, the Board selects its officers to serve one-year leadership terms.

In collaboration with Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley, the Compton Unified Board of Trustees has helped lead one of the most significant transformations in the district's history. Under the Board's leadership, Compton Unified has achieved a record-high graduation rate of 94%, expanded college and career opportunities, strengthened its financial stability, and invested in state-of-the-art learning environments for scholars. Following the opening of the new Compton High School in 2025, construction is underway on a new Centennial High School, scheduled to open within the next three years. Compton residents approved Bond CPT in the June 2, 2026 election, which will fund the total rebuild of Dominguez High School. Together, the Board and Superintendent remain committed to ensuring every Compton Unified scholar has access to world-class educational opportunities and the resources needed to succeed.
