CUSD Expands Family Literacy Through Latino Family Literacy Project
Compton Unified School District is proud to highlight the implementation of the Latino Family Literacy Project at McNair, Roosevelt, McKinley, Dickison, and Foster, an initiative designed to support Latino families and strengthen literacy development at home.

The Latino Family Literacy Project empowers families with meaningful, research-based strategies that help establish strong reading habits, build language skills, and deepen parent–child engagement. Through a series of interactive workshops, families come together to read and discuss bilingual, culturally relevant books in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Participating families are encouraged to continue reading at home by taking the books with them, reinforcing literacy learning beyond the classroom. The program also supports both Spanish literacy and English language development, helping families nurture bilingualism while strengthening overall communication skills.

McNair, Roosevelt, and McKinley have successfully completed the full series of workshops, while Dickison and Foster recently began the program. In addition to reading activities, parents create a family album to share photos, set literacy goals, and reflect on their progress throughout the program—capturing their journey and celebrating growth along the way.
The Latino Family Literacy Project is one of many ways Compton Unified is partnering with families to support student success, promote a love of reading, and build strong learning foundations that begin at home.
