Dominguez Scholars Shine at Rose Parade
Four Dominguez High School scholars had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride in the iconic Rose Parade as part of their participation in the 3DE by Junior Achievement program at their school. Melonie, Yamilet, Meltzer, and Lonnie were selected to represent Dominguez High School on the The UPS Store’s “Sharing Skills for Success” float by, placing them at the heart of one of the most-watched parades in the world.

As the float rolled down Colorado Boulevard, it made history by earning a Guinness World Records title as the world’s largest animatronic fish and earned top honors for Most Outstanding Artistic Design and Use of Floral and Non-Floral Materials.

More than a visual spectacle, the towering seahorse symbolized the real-world learning experiences provided through Junior Achievement of Southern California and 3DE by Junior Achievement—programs that help students build critical skills such as teamwork, confidence, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking.

Rather than simply observing the moment, the four scholars experienced it firsthand, riding on the float and showcasing the power of career-connected learning on a national stage. Their participation highlighted what is possible when students are supported by strong educational programs, mentorship, and access to opportunities beyond the classroom.

The experience was made possible through The UPS Store’s Start Small, Grow Big campaign with Junior Achievement of Southern California, which has invested millions of dollars nationwide to empower young people.

From Dominguez High School classrooms to a world-record-setting Rose Parade float, Melonie, Yamilet, Meltzer, and Lonnie’s journey reflects how education, community partnerships, and opportunity can come together to create transformative experiences for students.

The 3DE by Junior Achievement program has been part of the Dominguez High School learning experience for two years, providing students with building skills in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness through hands-on, real-world learning.

This year, the 3DE by Junior Achievement partnership expanded within Compton Unified School District to include Compton High School and Centennial High School, extending these innovative learning experiences to even more scholars across the district.
