Dominguez Newcomers Visit Cerritos College to Build College-Going Culture

Media Release

Students from Dominguez High School recently took an important step toward their future by visiting the Cerritos College campus, gaining firsthand exposure to college life and post-secondary opportunities.

During the visit, 31 Newcomer scholars explored the campus, while students in grades 9 through 12 attended an informational presentation focused on admissions requirements, financial aid options, and career pathways. The experience allowed students to ask questions, learn directly from college representatives, and better understand the steps needed to pursue higher education.

College campus visits play a critical role in building a strong college-going culture, particularly for students who may be the first in their families to consider higher education. By walking a campus, sitting in presentations, and engaging with college staff, students begin to see themselves as future college students. These experiences help demystify the college process, increase confidence, and turn long-term aspirations into achievable goals.

At Compton Unified School District, opportunities like these are part of a broader commitment to preparing students for life after high school. That commitment is reflected in the district’s outcomes, including a 94 percent graduation rate and a 95 percent college acceptance rate. By exposing students early and often to college environments and providing them with the knowledge and resources they need, Compton Unified continues to create pathways to success.

Visits like the one to Cerritos College reinforce the message that college is possible, attainable, and within reach for all students—helping ensure they graduate prepared, empowered, and ready for their next chapter.
