Compton Unified Seniors Earn College Acceptances and Scholarships at Los Angeles Black College Expo

Media Release

60 Compton Unified scholars stepped into their futures at the Los Angeles Black College Expo in Pomona, California—an experience that ignited vision, confidence, and endless possibility. While there, they attended impactful seminars on finding money for college, entrepreneurship, and building a success mindset inspired by Think and Grow Rich.

With more than 100 HBCUs present, the Compton Unified scholars also experienced the vibrant culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities through dynamic drumlines, majorettes, and Greek life. Conversations with current HBCU students gave them real insight into campus life, leadership opportunities, and the strong sense of community that defines the HBCU experience.

CUSD is excited to announce several scholars who received on-the-spot acceptances:

Layla Green, Compton High School – Accepted to Southern University and A&M College and Grambling State University.

Joshua Crathers, Centennial High School – Accepted to Grambling State University and Southern University and A&M College, and awarded a $10,000 scholarship.

Delores James, Centennial High School – Accepted to Grambling State University and Benedict College, and received a $6,000 scholarship.

The Los Angeles Black College Expo was more than a college fair—it was a powerful reminder that our students are college-bound and destined for excellence.
