Bunche Middle School Wins City of STEM Esports Tournament

Compton Unified teams claim first and second place in a standout regional competition, highlighting the district’s strength in STEM education and competitive esports.

CUSD scholars delivered an extraordinary showing at the recent City of STEM Esports Rocket League Finals, with two district teams earning the top two spots in the competition. Bunche Middle School captured the championship, while Davis Middle School secured second place—an impressive 1–2 finish that highlights the strength of Compton Unified’s growing STEM and esports programs.

The tournament brought together 16 middle school teams from across Los Angeles and Orange counties, all competing for a place in the Final Four and championship round. Both Bunche and Davis advanced through a highly competitive bracket to meet in the final match, held at the Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey. The all-Compton Unified championship matchup showcased not only the skill of the students, but also the district’s commitment to preparing scholars for success in technology-driven fields.

Bunche Middle School ultimately emerged as the tournament champion after a thrilling final against Davis Middle School. The Bunche championship team included Javier Aroche, Nathan Soto, team captain Santiago Soto, and Lucas Ramirez. Representing Davis Middle School and finishing as tournament runner-up were Steven Marono-Alejandre, Alex Ceja, Abraham Ovando, and Salvador Amaya.

This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication, teamwork, and strategic thinking demonstrated by both teams throughout the competition. Their success also underscores the importance of STEM education within Compton Unified School District, where students are introduced to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at an early age and given opportunities to apply those skills in innovative ways.
