Bunche Middle School Celebrates Grand Opening of New Fitness Center
Bunche Middle School celebrated the grand opening of its new UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind Fitness Center, a transformative investment in student health and wellness made possible through partnerships with UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind and LA Care Health Plan.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was emceed by Bunche Middle School Principal Polk, who welcomed students, staff, and community leaders to celebrate the opening of the state-of-the-art facility. The event featured remarks from LA Care Health Plan’s Charlie Robinson, Chief Health Equity Officer, and Matt Flesock, Executive Director of UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind, both of whom emphasized the importance of expanding access to fitness resources and creating healthier futures for young people.

Also in attendance were Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees member Alma Taylor Pleasant and Compton City Councilwoman Deidre Duhart, who joined in celebrating this significant investment in the Bunche school community.

Bunche scholars Damian Herd and Lizbeth Pineda shared heartfelt reflections during the ceremony, speaking about the excitement and opportunities the new fitness center brings to their campus. Their remarks highlighted the positive impact the space will have on students’ physical and mental well-being.

Following the remarks, attendees gathered for the official ribbon cutting at the fitness center, marking the opening of the new space. Bunche scholars were among the first to experience the facility, eagerly trying out the wide range of modern fitness equipment, while guests toured the center and celebrated the addition of this dynamic new resource.

The UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind Fitness Center at Bunche Middle School will provide more than 300 scholars with access to high-quality equipment and a safe, supportive environment to stay active—reinforcing Compton Unified’s commitment to student wellness and whole-child development.
