Compton Unified Scholars Win Coast Film & Music Festival Awards

Media Release

Compton Unified is celebrating major recognition at the prestigious Coast Film & Music Festival in Laguna Beach, where student filmmakers from across the district showcased their exceptional talent, creativity, and storytelling skills.

Two standout films from the Dominguez High School Digital Media Production Pathway earned top honors. Compton Roots received the Audience Choice Award, reflecting its strong connection with viewers and its compelling portrayal of community pride and identity. Illegal earned both the Coast Legacy Award and the Humanitarian Award, distinctions that speak to the film’s powerful narrative, social impact, and the students’ ability to address meaningful issues through art.

The district was also proudly represented by Davis Middle School, which advanced to the finals with its documentary Journey Through Technology. The film chronicles a student’s personal journey of growth and self-discovery through her relationship with technology.

Although Davis did not take home an award, reaching the finals at such a competitive festival is a remarkable achievement and highlights the promising future of Compton Unified’s young filmmakers.

These accomplishments underscore the strength of Compton Unified’s media, arts, and STEM-focused programs, which encourage students to develop their voices, explore new technologies, and engage in creative expression. The district continues to invest in programs that prepare students for careers in film, digital media, and emerging industries.
