6th Annual Event Showcased Scholar Innovation and the Power of STEAM Education
Compton Unified School District welcomed more than 7,000 scholars, families, partners, and community members to Compton College for the amazing 6th Annual STEAMFest: Surf’s Up! Waves of Innovation on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
This signature district-wide event continues to be a bold celebration of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics—bringing together hands-on learning, student creativity, and a powerful commitment to educational excellence and environmental sustainability.
This year’s theme, “Waves of Innovation,” focused on the need for ocean conservation and inspired student projects that reflected innovative approaches to protecting the planet. From ocean-cleaning robots to sustainable art installations, scholars used STEAMFest as a lens to imagine a more sustainable and technologically advanced future.
CUSD’s 2025 STEAMFest featured:
- More than 1,000 CUSD student exhibitors and performers
- STEAM projects from all 36 Compton Unified schools
- Nearly 100 exhibiting sponsors and partners, including Verizon, Raising Cane’s, Boeing, SpaceX, LEGO, Lenovo, RTX, and Home Depot
- Robotics demonstrations, Esports tournaments, virtual reality simulations, live student performances, and much more
Adding to the excitement were special guest appearances by legendary Compton DJ Toddy Tee and rising rap star Skilla Baby, creating a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere that reflected the energy and innovation of Compton Unified scholars.
STEAMFest is more than a one-day celebration. It’s the culmination of year-round STEAM education efforts across CUSD—efforts that have been recognized at the highest levels. The District’s Department of Innovation and Technology was recently honored with a Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association, acknowledging CUSD’s leadership in integrating educational technology and STEAM learning throughout its Pre-K to 12th grade programs.
These efforts are not only transforming classrooms—they’re changing futures. Today, more than 53 percent of Compton Unified graduates go on to pursue careers in STEM-related fields, a testament to the district’s commitment to preparing students for college, career, and global citizenship.
With free admission and parking, STEAMFest remains one of the most inclusive and inspiring educational events in the region. The continued growth and success of the event highlight how Compton Unified is leading the way in STEAM education and redefining what is possible for public schools.
As CUSD looks ahead, the district remains committed to expanding access to cutting-edge programs, building industry partnerships, and empowering the next generation of leaders, engineers, designers, and scientists.
