Davis Middle School Scholars Present in Hawaii
Davis Middle School teacher and Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (ViLs) Coach, Mr. Jose Gonzalez, along with a group of talented student scholars, recently had the honor of presenting at the prestigious 2025 Kamehameha Schools Education Technology Conference in Hawaii.
Mr. Gonzalez led a session focused on the power of Project-Based Learning (PBL), sharing how his teaching has been transformed by the ViLs Lab Curriculum. His students took the stage to present their innovative, tech-driven projects—demonstrating tools like Micro:bits, Tinkercad, CoSpaces, and 3D printing—and even taught audience members how to use the same technology themselves.
The projects centered around ocean sustainability and the impact of microplastics, directly aligning with the theme of this year’s Compton Unified STEAMFest. These efforts have not only deepened learning but also earned international recognition, including honors from the Ciena World Challenge, the Micro:bit International Showcase, and the City of STEM Innovation Challenge.
While in Hawaii, the group also enjoyed cultural and natural experiences, including touring a tropical forest, sailing off the coast of Waikiki, visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center, relaxing at Waikiki Beach, and dining at the renowned Monkeypod Kitchen.
Congratulations to Mr. Gonzalez and the Davis Middle School scholars for representing Compton Unified School District on an international stage and showcasing the power of student-centered learning and innovation.
