Clinton Elementary Hosts Governor Newsom's Literacy Press Conference
Highlighting Compton Unified's Leadership in Student Achievement
California Governor Gavin Newsom visited Clinton Elementary School for a special press conference celebrating Compton Unified’s progress in literacy and outlining the state's bold next steps in supporting student achievement.
Joined by Compton Unified Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley, Clinton Elementary Principal Ms. Miranda, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, and several enthusiastic Clinton scholars, Governor Newsom shared powerful remarks on the future of education in California.
A highlight of the day was the Governor’s interaction with students—taking time to speak with them and even read aloud—creating an unforgettable experience for Clinton’s young learners.
During the event, Governor Newsom unveiled the Golden State Literacy Plan. This initiative builds on impactful programs like the Literacy Coaches and Reading Specialists (LCRS) Grant, which already supports more than 800 schools across the state.
The press conference also spotlighted the Superintendent’s Cohort to Move the Needle on Test Scores—a bold and data-driven effort designed to uplift the academic outcomes of over 2 million students statewide.
Compton Unified School District is proud to be a leader in this work. The district currently ranks number one in both the state of California and Los Angeles County for test score performance among similar districts, showcasing the power of strategic investment, educator excellence, and a relentless commitment to student success.
