Swimming Returns to Compton Unified with a Splash
Scholars Enjoy Summer Enrichment Swim Lessons

Swimming is back in Compton Unified—and it's making waves in all the right ways.

This week, scholars from Jefferson, Kennedy, and Tibby Elementary Schools kicked off swim lessons at the new state-of-the-art Compton High School pool. These lessons, made possible through a partnership with the Sloane Stephens Foundation, are part of the district’s expanded Summer Enrichment Program. Through the program, students are gaining access to high-quality instruction that promotes water safety, physical fitness, and confidence.

The opening of the new Compton High School pool marks an exciting chapter for the district. For years, swimming was offered through the school district, but that’s changing fast. With this new facility, Compton Unified is ramping up efforts to build a comprehensive swim program that not only teaches students the basics but also inspires them to pursue swimming at a competitive level.

The district has set a bold vision for the future: to develop Olympic-caliber swimmers right here in Compton. With strong community partnerships, modern facilities, and a commitment to equity in athletics, Compton Unified is ensuring that every child has the chance to dive into new possibilities—both in and out of the pool.

Beginning this school year, Compton High School will introduce swim lessons for students and launch a brand-new swim team. These additions will provide ongoing opportunities for students to grow their skills, compete in meets, and represent their school in the pool—adding yet another layer to Compton High’s already vibrant athletic program.
And when the new Centennial High School opens, it will also have a new pool to build a new sports rivalry with Compton High School.
