Compton Success Profiles: Mari Avalos, Centennial High School

Media Release

Mari Avalos, a proud member of the Centennial High School Class of 2025, is preparing to take the next big step in her academic journey. This fall, she will attend the University of Kansas, where she plans to major in Biochemistry with the goal of becoming a veterinarian.

During her time at Centennial, Mari was selected for the WGA Caddie Academy, a unique summer program that took her to Chicago to train as a golf caddie. Through this experience, she became eligible for and was awarded the prestigious Evans Scholarship, which provides full tuition and housing to high-achieving caddies from limited financial backgrounds.

Mari’s educational path began in Compton at McNair and Bursch Elementary Schools, followed by Enterprise Middle School. As a high school student, she became more involved in extracurricular activities beginning her sophomore year, joining the softball team and later participating in the marching band during her senior year.

Reflecting on her high school experience, Mari encourages younger students to take advantage of every opportunity from day one—whether it’s joining clubs, sports, or enrolling in college courses early.

Mari Avalos represents the dedication, resilience, and excellence that define Compton Unified scholars. She is another Compton Success Story.
