CUSD Scholars Take Flight at ACE Academy
Compton Unified School District scholars had the opportunity of a lifetime during a weeklong immersive experience at the OBAP Los Angeles ACE (Aviation Career Education) Academy, held at Whaley Middle School and proudly hosted by American Airlines and CUSD’s BSA.

The ACE Academy is designed to introduce students to the vast world of aviation and aerospace through engaging, hands-on activities and expert instruction.
Throughout the week, scholars explored aviation history, the principles of flight, and the many career pathways available within the industry—from aerospace engineering to piloting, maintenance, and aviation operations.

As part of the experience, scholars engaged in a wide range of activities, including flight simulation, classroom instruction, and the operation of unmanned aerial systems and remote-control vehicles. They also took part in field trips that brought their learning to life:

At March Air Reserve Base and Museum, students learned about the history and evolution of flight. At Relativity, they were introduced to aerospace engineering and aviation maintenance. A visit to LAX with American Airlines provided firsthand insight into careers in piloting, flight operations, customer service, and aircraft maintenance.

One of the highlights of the program was the opportunity for students to take the controls in a real aircraft, flying alongside a certified pilot over the City of Compton from the Compton Woodley Airport. Prior to takeoff, each student completed a flight exam, further reinforcing their learning and boosting their confidence.

The program also included a guest speaker from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and a celebratory lunch hosted by the Fly Compton Aeronautical Education Foundation. In recognition of their efforts and achievements, each student earned 1–2 hours of official flight credit and was honored in a special closing ceremony.

Compton Unified is proud to support programs like the ACE Academy that empower our students to dream big, pursue meaningful careers, and take their learning to new heights.
