61 CUSD Scholars Accepted to HBCUs, Awarded $1-Million in Scholarships

More than 200 scholars from Centennial, Compton, Compton Early College, and Dominguez High Schools had an incredible opportunity to connect with representatives from over 20 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) at Dominguez High School and submit applications on the spot. By the end of the day, 61 CUSD scholars received college acceptances, with more than $1-million in scholarships awarded.

The district continues to foster a strong college-going culture, encouraging higher education for its students. In 2024, Compton Unified achieved a 93% graduation rate and an 88% college acceptance rate. CUSD’s College & Career Indicator ranked #1 in Los Angeles County and #1 statewide among similar districts.

Compton Unified School District’s flagship college access initiative, Compton Goes to College!, was recently honored with the 2024 Golden Bell Award by the California School Boards Association (CSBA). This prestigious recognition highlights the program’s transformative impact on college readiness within the Compton community.

Additionally, the CUSD College & Career Department received the 2024 Power of Hope Award, recognizing outstanding districts for increasing college and career outcomes across the district.

College fairs like this one play a vital role in expanding students’ access to higher education by bringing colleges directly to them. These events expose scholars to a wide range of opportunities, helping them explore various academic programs, financial aid options, and career pathways. By making the college application process more accessible, Compton Unified ensures that every student is empowered to make informed decisions about their future.
