Mastering the Mix: DJ R-Tistic Inspires Compton HS Scholars
DJ R-Tistic stopped by Compton High School to drop some serious knowledge on Mr. Jones’ Audio Production class recently. He led an interactive DJ workshop, sharing insights on the history of DJing, music production, and how to build a sustainable career in the industry. Scholars got a front-row seat to a masterclass in mixing, scratching, and selecting tracks that define different eras and styles of hip-hop.
With over 30 scholars in attendance, DJ R-Tistic broke down how DJs get paid, how different regions influence musical tastes, and why staying ahead of trends is crucial. “Every state has its own style and sound,” he explained, showing how what works in L.A. might not hit the same in Atlanta.
He also shared how the industry has evolved—from spinning vinyl to today’s digital DJ setups—reminding students that success comes from constant learning and adaptation.
As Head of Music at Hoorae Media (founded by Issa Rae) and one of the top touring DJs in the world, DJ R-Tistic knows what it takes to thrive in the industry. You can catch him DJing the Honda Battle of the Bands at SoFi Stadium this Saturday!
The Compton High School students were thankful for the visit and opportunity to learn more about a career working as a DJ.
