Compton Early College Career Day Exposes 350 Scholars to Various Jobs

Media Release

What do attorneys, police officers, software engineers, emergency room doctors, social workers, project engineers, and publicists all have in common? They were all at Compton Early College recently, talking to more than 350 scholars as part of an amazing Career Day.

As Compton Early College High School Principal Maddox said, it’s about exposure – getting scholars exposed to many different jobs and careers so they have a better idea of what they can become and how to achieve that.  Compton Early College holds the career day annually, bringing in around 20 professionals representing a wide variety of business occupations to discuss their careers, salary, education, and experience need and more. Scholars had the opportunity to ask questions as well.

The day culminated with a panel discussion where eight of the visitors addressed the junior and senior classes, talking about their careers and answering scholars’ questions.

Many of the professionals explained that the jobs they are in now were not what they thought they’d be doing and encouraged scholars to try different career paths to find what they really enjoyed doing. Time and again, the professionals said that their careers were not about making money but about doing something that they loved and helping others.

As one said, “Don’t worry about getting the perfect job, just start with a job. Then you can learn what you like and work toward that career.”

A huge thank you to all the professionals who took the time to invest in the scholars’ futures!
