400 CUSD Scholars Attend Sloane Stephens Foundation Play Day
Approximately 400 Compton Unified elementary scholars enjoyed a full day of athletic play, teamwork, and inspiration at the Sloane Stephens Foundation Tennis and Soccer Play Day held at Compton High School.

Scholars from Bunche, Dickison, Emerson, Jefferson, Longfellow, McKinley, and Tibby took part in a wide range of activities, including tennis instruction, soccer drills, and fitness stations featuring running, jumping, and throwing exercises. The event was designed to promote physical activity, introduce students to new sports, and build confidence through hands-on, engaging experiences.

Tennis champion Sloane Stephens joined students on the courts, providing guidance on technique, leading drills, and offering encouragement throughout the day. Scholars were also treated to t-shirts and lunches, further adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Stephens’ presence and positive energy made a lasting impression on students, many of whom were playing tennis for the first time.

The Play Day is part of the Sloane Stephens Foundation’s broader partnership with Compton Unified, which includes ongoing in-school and afterschool athletic programs across the district. Through this collaboration, CUSD students gain access to high-quality sports instruction, opportunities for skill development, and meaningful mentorship from trained coaches and professional athletes.

Compton Unified is thankful for the partnership with the Sloane Stephens Foundation and its opportunities that support students’ physical health, personal growth, and overall well-being.
