Davis Wins CUSD Middle School Esports Tournament

Media Release

Bunche, Clinton, and Tibby Rounded Out Top Four

Compton Unified recently held the finals of the Middle School Rocket League Esports Tournament at Bunche Middle School. The event marked the culmination of a competitive season that showcased the growing strength of esports programs across the district.

Davis won the CUSD Middle School Tournament.

After a series of intense matchups, Davis Middle School emerged as the tournament champion, demonstrating exceptional teamwork, strategy, and consistency. Bunche Middle School earned second place after a strong season and a hard-fought final match. Clinton Middle School secured third place, with Tibby Middle School rounding out the top four.

Bunche took 2nd place.

These finals highlighted more than just gameplay: they showcased the growth of students’ teamwork, digital literacy, problem-solving, and collaboration — skills that the district aims to nurture through its expanding esports program.

Davis earned 3rd place.

The tournament is part of the district-wide Compton Unified School District (CUSD) esports initiative, known as the Compton Unified Esports League (CUEL). CUEL not only offers competitive opportunities for students across middle and high schools, but also supports STEAM education and career readiness through gaming, mentoring, and exposure to technology and media industries.

Tibby earned 4th place.

CUSD’s commitment to innovation and equity in education has already been recognized statewide: in 2023, the district earned a Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association (CSBA) for its esports program — underscoring the value of providing inclusive, forward-looking opportunities for students.

Congratulations to all the teams, coaches, and supporters who made today’s finals (and the entire season) a success. We look forward to the next chapter of competitive gaming, learning, and growth within our community.
