CUSD Scholars Tour Carpenters Union Training Facility

Media Release

Chavez Continuation High School recently brought 18 scholars from Chavez Centennial and Compton High Schools to tour the Carpenters Union 323 South LA Training Facility in Carson. The state-of-the-art center, completed in 2023, provides high-quality training resources to support career pathways for the surrounding community.

During the visit, students were guided by the Local President and the union’s outreach team, who provided an in-depth introduction to the 33 types of carpentry, the history of the trade, and the union’s mission to expand opportunity for residents.

Scholars toured the lobby, classrooms, union hall, and the expansive training center where apprentices develop and refine their skills. A highlight of the experience was meeting an African American female apprentice on her final day before becoming a journeyman carpenter. She shared insights about her training, experiences, and the importance of perseverance in the trades.

Through Compton Unified’s Career Technical Education (CTE) programs, students are gaining exposure to real-world career pathways and learning skilled trades that can lead to strong, sustainable, and well-paying careers after graduation.

Chavez Continuation High School plans to return with another group of students in late February or early March.
