Dickison's Roxana Vargas Named 2025 CUSD Teacher of the Year

Media Release

Congratulations to Roxana Vargas, a 3rd-grade teacher at Dickison Elementary School, for being named Compton Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year! Ms. Vargas received the exciting news during a surprise visit to her classroom by Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley and top district administrators.

Ms. Vargas currently teaches a 3rd-grade Dual Immersion class and brings an impressive 26 years of teaching experience to her students, with 23 of those years proudly served within Compton Unified. She began her career at Dickison Elementary, taught there for two years, spent nearly two decades at Mayo Elementary School, and recently returned to Dickison to continue inspiring young learners.

Each year, Compton Unified schools select one Teacher of the Year to honor from among their staff. From these honorees, one is chosen to represent the entire District in the Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year program, organized by the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

The Teachers of the Year program is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious recognition initiative focused on celebrating excellence in teaching. Launched in 1972, the California Teachers of the Year program is part of the National Teacher of the Year program, sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with Scholastic, Inc.

We are proud to celebrate Ms. Vargas for her outstanding commitment, passion, and dedication to her students and the Compton Unified community. Congratulations again on this well-deserved honor!
