Washington Scholars Hold Breast Cancer Awareness Event
In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Washington Elementary scholars and staff came together to participate in a meaningful Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at their school, honoring loved ones who are battling or have battled breast cancer. This heartfelt event was part of the school's ongoing effort to teach students the importance of community support, empathy, and health awareness.
The day began with a sea of pink, as scholars and staff dressed in the color symbolizing breast cancer awareness. Each student was given a special paper to fill out, writing down the names of individuals they knew who have been affected by breast cancer. Whether it was a family member, friend, neighbor, or teacher, these names were lovingly dedicated to the walk, making it personal and meaningful for everyone involved.
In a symbolic gesture, the entire school walked four laps around the yard, representing the four stages of breast cancer. The event was not only about raising awareness but also about encouraging students to think about how they can make a difference.
Principal Alicia Weyeneth emphasized that the school community is standing strong in solidarity with those affected by the disease. She also inspired her scholars to excel in their academics, suggesting that one day, they could be the ones to discover a cure.
“We want to let everyone in our community who’s currently struggling with this disease know that we are here for them. We stand by them, and they are survivors,” said Principal Weyeneth.
The event fostered a strong sense of unity and hope, encouraging the entire school community to continue supporting breast cancer awareness initiatives both inside and outside of school.
Washington Elementary School is dedicated not only to academic excellence but also to fostering compassion and responsibility in its students, encouraging them to be change-makers in their community. Through events like these, scholars are learning the importance of raising awareness for critical causes like breast cancer and using their voices and actions to support those in need.
