80 CUSD Scholars Become "USC Students For a Day"
More than 80 CUSD scholars from Emerson, Kelly, King, McNair, Tibby, Washington, and Whaley took part in the “USC Student For a Day” program, thanks to CUSD’s Black Student Achievement Department and University of Southern California (USC).
The immersive college experience was aimed at inspiring young scholars to envision themselves in higher education and offered a glimpse into campus life, from navigating classrooms to cheering on the Trojans at a football game.
Scholars began the day embarking on a self-guided tour, equipped with a campus-highlights map and audio clips at each stop. Like college students heading to class, they practiced navigating campus by following directions and locating key buildings, building their confidence and excitement as they imagined themselves in a college environment.
The day concluded at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum where scholars had an exclusive meet-and-greet with the USC football team, where players shared words of encouragement and stories of perseverance, underscoring the importance of dedication both in academics and athletics.
For those inspired by music, the program also included a visit with USC’s renowned marching band, where musicians discussed the joy of being part of a college ensemble.
Then the CUSD students watched the Trojans take on Rutgers, cheering on a thrilling USC victory.
With more than 80 young scholars exposed to the college lifestyle, the “USC Student for a Day” event marked a significant step forward in the Black Student Achievement Department’s commitment to providing career and academic exploration opportunities, opening doors for students and encouraging them to envision a future in higher education.
