The keynote speaker was Ray Lozano, a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Youth Speaker, as well as a former stand-up comedian and private elementary school vice principal. His discussion combined education, information, and humor to ensure that his message about drug abuse was both entertaining and enlightening for the students.

Spring Fest attendees also watched Ghosted, a live play from Kaiser Permanente, and visited booths from partners such as St. John’s Community Health, West Coast Dental & Orthodontics, Bridges From School To Work, Tupe, as well as CUSD’s mental health and CTE departments.

During Spring Fest, scholars got to experience Healing Through the Arts directly through several different interactive sessions including the opportunity to create Art on the Wall and design their own Shield.

Ms. Kirk quizzed scholars about the movie.

Compton Early College High School 10th Grader Angel really enjoyed the play Ghosted. “The play was telling us about mental health, anxiety, and depression and if you feel like you need help, to get help. A lot of people I know could really relate to that. I could relate to that.”

Students created their own Shield.

Other students appreciated the education they received at Spring Fest. “My favorite part of Spring Fest was getting educated on how I should never do drugs, smoke pot, cocaine, and things like that,” said Compton Early College High School 9th Grader Zoey. “I liked that.”
