30 CUSD Teams Compete in Drones Competition - Whaley Wins
More than 200 CUSD students participated in the Aerial Drone Competition on Saturday at Dominguez High School. In collaboration with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Compton Airport Chapter 96 and Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation, 30 teams from 13 Compton Unified schools showcased their drone piloting, programming, and communication skills in a heart-racing competition throughout the day.
Students participated in the comprehensive and exciting drone sporting event focused on hands-on experience. Teams learned about drone flight principles and programming, enhancing communication, and problem-solving skills.
Tournament Champion 1st Place: Whaley MS: Team 14401C
Students also expanded their understanding and built interest in drone-related workforce and career opportunities.
Tournament Champion 2nd Place: King ES: Team 77057A
Kennedy Elementary scholars Viviana Aguilar, Cecilia Camacho, and Maylee Martinez, who’s team name was the Hawks, talked about why they were participating in the event: “We’re doing it to learn about new things and have fun,” said Aguilar. “We’re also seeing our old friends and meeting new people.”

“The thing I appreciate about the competition is the creativity you get to have flying the drones,” added Martinez.

In the end, Whaley Middle School took the title of Tournament Champion, while King Elementary School flew to 2nd Place. Here’s the full list of awards given out.
