Compton Success Profiles: Emily Garcia, Dominguez High School

Media Release

Meet Emily Garcia, Dominguez High School Class of 2024 graduate. She will be attending University of California, Los Angeles in the fall, majoring in Public Health. After college, she wants to become an epidemiologist, a person who studies disease and how they impact communities.

While at Dominguez, she was active in numerous clubs and sports. She joined the soccer team to get out of the house during COVID, was active in JSA, and also took numerous dual enrollment courses. Emily says those were the places where she developed her best friendships.

Emily credits the teachers and staff at Dominguez. “We have some really good people here. They give it their all to support students who aren’t as fortunate as others.”

No one in Emily’s family was able to graduate, but they instilled the value of education on her. She says her mother has been a big supporter of her doing well in school, and she also received support of the Dominguez’ college advisors. “Sometimes my mom and the college advisors believed in me more than I did. At times, it was that little push that I needed to keep going.”

Emily Garcia is another Compton Success Story.
