Whaley Middle School Scholars Perform Get Lit-Words Ignite Poetry
Who loves poetry? Whaley Middle School scholars recently performed amazing poems to a cheering audience of fellow students and family as part of the Get Lit-Words Ignite assembly.
Get Lit fuses classic and original spoken word poetry to increase student engagement and literacy, empower creative expression, and strengthen social-emotional skills. Throughout the program, Whaley students created performances of original poems as well as original spoken-word responses.
They went in-depth to unearth the poem’s relevance to their lives and current events in the world, giving their piece a fresh modern voice, while providing imagery, figurative language, and words expressed from their emotion and experience.
For the second year, the Golden Globe Foundation Grant award has been applied to four of Compton Unified’s middle schools, Bunche, Enterprise, Walton, and Whaley for the 2023-2024 school year, with the anticipation to continue in the upcoming year.
