Dr. Brawley kicked off the discussion at the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica, talking about the tremendous turnaround in the Compton Unified School District over the last 10 years, raising graduation rates to 90%, raising test scores above the levels of the surrounding districts, and creating dynamic partnerships with a vast array of major corporations such as Apple, Verizon, Northrop Grumman, and others. “I challenge you to find a school district that does more partnerships than Compton Unified,” he told the audience.

He said the overall focus at the district has been putting the kids first and focusing on their needs. And while there’s been tremendous success, he said there’s still a lot of work to be done. “What’s lacking is the internship and apprenticeship opportunities for the students in our community. They need more opportunities from big companies and businesses. The kids who need it most aren’t getting those internships opportunities.”

Randy Jackson agreed with the sentiment that kids need more mentors in their lives. He said he loved teaching and nurturing kids. “Sometimes, as a kid, you need someone who believes in you.”
