Media Release

Talk about instant results! CUSD held its HBCU College Fair and Conference last week and the event yielded amazing dividends: 81 Compton Unified scholars earned college acceptances and $1.5 million in scholarships were awarded as a direct result of the fair.

The HBCU College Fair, hosted by Charles R. Drew University, was attended by 300 students from Compton Unified’s four high schools - Centennial, Compton, Compton Early College, and Dominguez. The scholars had the opportunity to learn about approximately 20 different Historically Black Colleges and Universities and local universities. Seniors could apply on the spot to various colleges and get accepted that day.

CUSD Scholars talked to numerous HBCU representatives and even applied on the spot.

In addition, scholars attended multiple career sessions where they learned about a variety of occupations, what education was needed for those jobs, and how much money they would make in those professions. Some of the different trades people talked about included Space X engineers, firefighters, nursing home administrators, air traffic managers, social workers, bankers, lawyers, pilots, doctors and other medical jobs, and many more.

“I felt coming here gave me more in-depth experience with the people that I could be meeting when I go to the colleges,” said Dominguez High School student Mikah Wells. “I learned that each college has its own experience and I’ll have fun wherever I go.”

CUSD Board of Trustees President Denzell Perry (center) participated in a career panel.

“This was very beneficial because I learned about a lot of things such as the importance of networking,” said Nekaya Martin, Compton High School student. “I had never looked into HBCUs, but now I think I’d consider going to one. I also signed up for two programs that would help me get into a UC school. It feels like this community really cares about us and it feels like they’re helping us get set up for the rest of our life.”
