COMPTON, CA — Compton Unified School District (CUSD) is thrilled to announce the successful completion of its contract negotiations with three major labor partners, securing agreements that cover approximately 1,900 employees and 95 percent of its total workforce. These comprehensive agreements underscore the District's commitment to fostering strong, productive, and supportive working relationships with its staff and reflect the positive collective efforts of all parties involved to ensure the continued high-quality education for Compton Unified students.

“These agreements represent a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to strengthen our relationships with our unions,” said CUSD Board of Trustees President Denzell Perry. “We believe that the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect is crucial for our District's success. With graduation rates pushing past 90% and test scores up overall, together we’re delivering on our promise to build the next great generation of Compton Unified scholars.”

Contract Highlights:

  • The District successfully negotiated and agreed to agreements with the Teamsters  representing 552 employees and the California School Employees Association (CSEA) representing 250 employees. The CUSD Board of Trustees approved these contracts on December 21, 2023.
  • An agreement with the Compton Education Association (CEA) representing 910 employees followed, receiving Board approval on January 16, 2024.
  • Finally, contracts with Management, Confidential, and Unrepresented staff entailing 191 employees were approved by the Board on January 23, 2024.

Financial Terms

  • Central to these agreements is a 6.0% on-schedule salary increase for all bargaining units, retroactive to July 1, 2023. This adjustment acknowledges the hard work and dedication of our staff members across the board.
  • Additionally, a 1.5% off-schedule increase will be applied following the 6.0% on-schedule raise, further benefiting our employees' financial well-being.
  • The agreements also include contributions from CUSD toward each bargaining unit’s health and welfare benefits that cover most one-party medical plans. Those contributions include an annual $4,068 one-party contribution for CEA and Management, with a $3,000 contribution for two or more parties. The CSEA received an annual $3,000 contribution, while the Teamsters received an annual $432 one-party contribution, $828 two-party contribution, and $1,164 three-party or more contribution, underscoring the District's commitment to contributing to the overall health and security of our staff and their families.

The Compton Unified School District believes that these agreements not only affirm our appreciation for our employees' dedicated and tireless efforts, but also solidify our foundation for providing an enriching educational environment for our students.

“The benefits of these contracts extend beyond the immediate financial gains for these nearly 2,000 staff,” said CUSD Board of Trustees Clerk Micah Ali. “They are an investment in the future of our scholars and the whole Compton community, ensuring that our schools remain vibrant centers for learning and growth within our great city.”

One of the key factors in getting these deals done is the excellent financial footing of the Compton Unified School District. The District’s credit rating was recently raised to an A+ by S&P, due to the District’s demonstrated ability to adjust its budget to maintain structurally balanced operations.

“Our educators and staff are the backbone of our educational system, and these contracts reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring they are supported both professionally and personally,” said CUSD Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley. “We look forward to working proactively with all our partners to finalize upcoming contract negotiations and creating beneficial outcomes for everyone involved."
