17 CUSD Scholars Become Vets for a Day

Media Release

Seventeen Compton Unified School District (CUSD) scholars from 10 schools embarked on an exciting journey into the world of veterinary medicine during the transformative two-day "Vet for a Day" event. Designed to inspire and educate, this experience offered students a unique opportunity to explore the field through immersive, hands-on activities and mentorship from Black veterinarians.

Students from Anderson Elementary, Bunche Middle School, Bursch Elementary, Clinton Elementary, Compton Early College, Compton High School, Kelly, McKinley, Tibby, and Walton took part in this incredible event.

Guided by Black veterinarians, including Dr. Terrence Ferguson from Nat Geo Wild’s Critter Fixers, students participated in engaging, real-life activities:

  • X-ray Challenges: Learning to interpret animal X-rays.
  • Suturing Practice: Mastering the basics of surgical techniques.
  • Surgery Techniques: Gaining insights into essential procedures.
  • Pet Nutrition Lessons: Exploring dietary needs for pets.
  • Ultrasound Technology: Understanding diagnostic tools.
  • Live Feline Surgeries: Witnessing real veterinary procedures.

This event was more than an introduction to veterinary medicine. With role models like Dr. Ferguson, students not only gained practical skills but also saw the power of representation and mentorship in action. These experiences emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, inspiring the next generation of professionals.

"Vet for a Day" wasn’t just an event—it was a stepping stone toward creating a more inclusive future in veterinary medicine. By combining hands-on learning with real-world representation, this program empowered students with skills, confidence, and dreams to pursue careers in STEM fields.

A special thanks to Downtown Dog Rescue, the Long Beach Convention Center, Dr. Ferguson, and all participating veterinarians for making this transformative experience possible.

The students of Compton Unified are one step closer to becoming leaders in STEM. Stay tuned as we continue to support and celebrate their incredible journeys!
