150 CUSD Scholars Attend UNCF Empower Me College Readiness Tour

Media Release

150 CUSD scholars took part in the UNCF Empower Me Tour at the Hyatt Regency LAX recently. At this unique college readiness program, scholars from Centennial, Compton, Compton Early College, and Dominguez High Schools had a unique opportunity to engage directly with representatives from more than 15 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), applying for colleges, and even receiving scholarships on the spot.

The seniors and juniors participated in on-site admissions, gaining immediate opportunities to advance their education. They also took part in engaging college prep workshops, informative sessions on paying for college, and breakout discussions tailored specifically for male and female students, including activities such as learning how to tie a tie for an interview.

The event culminated with 12 scholars receiving $2,500 scholarships, generously provided by Wells Fargo, bringing them closer to their college goals.

This impactful experience provided students with valuable tools, knowledge, and resources to help turn their dreams of higher education into a reality.

This amazing experience is part of Compton Unified’s 2024 Golden Bell Award-winning initiative, Compton Goes to College! Events like these are a testament to our unwavering commitment to fostering a strong college-going culture.
