Laurel Street and Clinton Scholars Enjoy Computer Science Week

Media Release

This week, scholars across Compton Unified joined in the celebration of Computer Science Week with a variety of engaging and educational activities designed to spark interest in coding and digital creativity.

At Laurel Street, students participated in the Hour of Code, an initiative introducing the basics of computer science through guided, hands-on coding projects. Led by STEAM Lab Tech Mr. Ramos, students worked with RVR block coding to program robots to follow specific patterns on a table.

This activity emphasized critical thinking and problem-solving, with 6th graders stepping up to mentor 3rd and 4th-grade students, creating a collaborative and inspiring learning environment.

At Clinton, students took part in the Minecraft Storybook Showcase, where they combined Minecraft Education and Book Creator to design interactive digital storybooks. This creative project taught students narrative structure, character development, and digital storytelling, while showcasing the potential of technology in creative writing.

Through activities like these, Compton Unified continues to prepare its scholars for a future where computer science and coding skills will play a vital role in industries like artificial intelligence, robotics, and beyond.
