13th Annual Compton Walk For A Cure at Centennial Saturday, Oct. 5

The 13th Annual Walk for a Cure is taking place on Saturday, October 5 at Centennial High School and is an opportunity for the community to unite and inspire one another.
This event is about uplifting cancer survivors and raising awareness around reducing the risk of breast cancer.
Co-founded by Compton Unified School District Board Vice President Satra Zurita, who is also a Breast Cancer Survivor, the event is free and features educational booths and experts talking about breast health and early detection, as well as performing exams.
More than 2,000 participants are expected to attend including CUSD Board Members, the Honorable Janna Zurita, CUSD students, families, friends, and Compton residents.
The event served a critical need to bring health awareness to the local community. At last year’s Compton Walk For A Cure, medical experts performed more than 250 exams, and found 30-plus masses, needing additional examinations.
The facts highlight the critical need for Breast Cancer Awareness in Los Angeles communities:
- Black women are about 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women.
- Black women have a lower five-year breast cancer survival rate vs. white women.
- Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Latina and Hispanic women.
- Hispanic and Latina are about 30% more likely to die from their breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women.
