Grammy-Nominated Maejor Talks at Compton HS

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and producer Maejor and music exec Tim Hinshaw, Free Lunch Founder & CEO, spoke to a packed Compton High School audio production class today about their career journeys, offering invaluable business and career advice to the scholars.

Maejor and Tim Hinshaw talk to Compton HS scholars about their careers in the music industry. 

In a talk titled "MUSIC GOT MY BACK,” the two discussed how music was there during difficult times and how they used music to overcome the obstacles in life. Tim grew up in Compton and saw tumultuous times along the way.

But he carved out a career working various jobs at Vans, Fender Guitars, Amazon Music, and just launched his own company, Free Lunch, with Amazon. He’s worked with some of the biggest music acts in the business and helped produce Kendrick Lamar’s ground-breaking sold-out Juneteenth Pop Out Show.

Maejor talked about coming from Detroit and making beats, getting more involved with the music industry, and then having a cancer diagnosis change his entire life. He’s overcome it today and is a thriving producer.

The class concluded with Compton High School scholars playing inspiring songs for the two, explaining their inspiration, and getting instant feedback.

In the end, scholars left with a much better understanding of what it takes to be in the music industry, how to prepare for the business, and how to follow your passion, whether it be music, art, or something else.
