Dominguez High School’s Junior State of America Club recently attended the Winter Congress in Washington, D.C. At Winter Congress, the 11 Dominguez scholars participated in a hands-on legislative simulation, learning how a bill is written, debated, amended — and they experienced the collaboration required to enact it.

For the Dominguez students who had never been out of California, it was an incredible experience. They met other students from around the country and learned about and discussed many different viewpoints.

They also explored the different sites around Washington, D.C. including the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Institution’s world-class museums, and more.

Junior State of America is a student-led organization that prepares a diverse community of high school students to participate effectively in the U.S. democracy. It offers hands-on civic programs designed to activate the talents of young people, instills values of respect and understanding, and inspires them to be a new generation of American leaders.

Throughout the year, JSA members attend conventions and institutions with other chapters from across Southern California and the nation, and participate in debates, activism, and college-ready programs.
