Dominguez Grads Receive Scholarships from NBA's Okongwu and Compton Magic

Media Release

Atlanta Hawks forward Onyeka Okongwu presented three former Dominguez High School basketball players scholarships at the Dominguez High School gym. Aaron Butler, who’s attending UCLA; Jordan Borthwell, who’s going to Cal State Dominguez Hills; and Isaac Sowell, who’s attending Humboldt State, each received $1,500 from the Compton Magic – Onyeka Okongwu Scholarship Fund.

“I played for the Compton Magic and these kids played for the Compton Magic,” said Okongwu. “For me, being a role model to kids across the country and the world, it's always good to give back and remember where you came from. I came from humble beginnings, born in South Central Los Angeles, so coming back here and giving back to the kids who I’m familiar with is always a blessing.”

Okongwu was a four-year starter at Chino Hills High School, played college basketball for the USC Trojans, and is entering his fourth season with the Atlanta Hawks. In the 2022-23 season, he played in 80 regular season games, and started in 18 games. He averaged 23 minutes per game, and scored nearly 10 points a game.

Compton Magic was founded in 1993 and is the premier Grassroots Program in the nation. More than 40 Compton Magic players have played in the NBA and their affiliates - with more than 300 taking the floor as college student-athletes.
