As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Whaley Middle School invited the Compton-based band Los Hijones to perform regional Mexican music for the students during a lively and exciting afternoon assembly.
Band members Pedro and Andres De Anda attended Clinton Elementary when they were growing up. While there, they sang and performed at various school events. Now that they’re older, they’ve formed a band, are performing regularly, recorded an album of cover songs, and are working on an album of original music. In addition, their father works for CUSD.
For Whaley Assistant Principal Christopher Clarke, it was a homecoming of sorts, as he knew the brothers when he worked at Clinton.
“To see these students become something special and use their talents this way is just such a great thing,” he said. “It's big for Compton.”
The brothers were happy to return and perform for the current students. “We’ve known Mr. Clarke ever since we were going to Clinton Elementary School,” said Andres. “He always looked out for us. It feels good to come back and play in front of these kids.”
While it is National Hispanic Heritage Month, Pedro says that it’s great seeing all cultures enjoy their performance.
“I know what it is to be part of a diverse community growing up,” said Pedro. “Some of my best friends were African American, some were Mexican, and I had friends from everywhere. So, being able to sing songs and see everybody singing along together feels good. It’s great knowing that we’re the reason why everyone is together right now.”
Clarke added that it was great seeing former scholars return, give back to the schools, and show the current students what they can achieve after graduation.
