BSA Hosts Two-in-One College Trip, Visits Horse Center
Media Release
What does meeting horses have to do with applying for a college? A lot, actually.
Compton Unified’s Department of Black Student Achievement hosted a two-in-one university visit recently. With 40 students from all four Compton Unified high schools, including Centennial, Compton Early College High School, Compton High School, and Dominguez, the group visited California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
In addition, as part of the Cal Poly Pomona visit, the group stopped by the W.K Kellogg Arabian Horse Center, which was established in 1925 by the cereal magnate Will Keith Kellogg. As part of the many majors offered at Cal Poly, Equine Science is one of them. It is a program that sets Cal Poly apart from other schools. The BSA wanted to expose students to a range of career options and provide a hands-on experience that would be memorable and give them the real-life exposure to animals. Many of the Compton students had never met an actual horse.
The purpose of BSA College Tours is to promote college access and to expose students to a range of colleges so that they may find the school that best fits their needs and interests. The BSA believes students are inspired to pursue higher education in many ways, one of which is through college visits and building comradery.
Cal Poly Pomona is the No. 1 polytechnic university in the nation for diversity and economic mobility. CSUF is a top public university in the 23-campus California State University system.
