In addition, a college fair featured more than 30 Cal State Universities (CSUs), University of California (UCs), community colleges, private colleges and universities, and Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs) that were present to talk to the students and discuss their schools and admission processes.

The day’s opening session kicked off with a speech from Dr. Sean James, Director of the Educational Opportunity Program at CSU, Dominguez Hills, who talked about growing up as a Compton resident and explained how he overcame bad grades and tough upbringing to take advantage of his opportunity at college, and then continue with his studies to become a Ph.D. and now serve as a mentor for today’s students.

He offered several words of encouragement to the attendees: “Believe you can do anything,” he said. “Work hard, set goals, and find a support system to help you reach those goals. You’ve got to have discipline and make the right choices.”
