CUSD Recognizes 9th Annual National Apprenticeship Week
Media Release
The 9th Annual National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is a nationwide celebration established by the U.S. Department of Labor taking place November 13-19, 2023, helping Americans access pathways to well-paying jobs in growing industries.
Recognizing the opportunity that apprenticeships offer students, the Compton Unified School District and Convergint have launched the Convergint Technical Apprenticeship Program (TAP) at Dominguez High School. This program began at the start of the school year and students were introduced to hands-on technical knowledge and skills in the industry, with the curriculum covering safety and basic electric, cable, infrastructure, and systems integration principles.
In preparation for this apprenticeship program, Dominguez High School teachers attended a two-week training course over the summer led by local Convergint colleagues. Dominguez’s teachers were prepared to actively instruct, review, and test students on core skills to pursue a security systems integration career. Throughout the duration of the TAP, teachers have continued technical and hands-on support from Convergint to ensure the best possible experience in the classroom.
Why should students participate in apprenticeships? There are several great reasons:
Students will build their earning potential by doing an apprenticeship. Workers who complete Registered Apprenticeship programs earn an average of $300,000 more over their career when compared to peers who do not.
It’s a great way for students to find fulltime employment. About 90% of apprentices retain employment after completing an apprenticeship program.
Apprenticeships can kick off a career with a great salary. The average starting wage after completing a Registered Apprenticeship program is $80,000.
Apprenticeships are good for both the employee and employer. The median estimate of the employer’s return on investment in Registered Apprenticeship is 44.3 percent.
Recent evaluations also show that pre-apprenticeship, supportive services, and other strategies are effective in promoting greater equity and inclusion in Registered Apprenticeship.
