CUSD Hosts New Generation Conference

Media Release

Compton Unified School District recently hosted a group of California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA) from various parts of the state, including Northern California, Silicon Valley, and San Diego County.

CALSA members toured CUSD’s Clinton Elementary, Davis Middle School, and Whaley Middle School, learning about the innovative programs such as the PBL+Blended Learning classrooms, and checking out eSports Gaming Labs, Coding Classes, Verizon Innovation Lab, and First Lego League Robotics programs.

“We thrilled to visit Compton Unified School District with the CALSA Innovative and Leadership Academy,” said Zandra Jo Galvan, CALSA President and Superintendent of the Greenfield Union School District in Monterey County. “We’ve visited some amazing schools and witnessed the things that kids are doing and how these will be game changing to their post-secondary success.”

“Every one of our experiences was amazing,” Galvan continued. “The members were walking through these Compton School classrooms and were walking away with all of these things they want to take back to their own schools and immediately implement because Compton has paved the way for us.”

CUSD was honored to host the group and share the various programs it has in its schools. “We are so proud that Compton Unified is showing the state and nation what we are doing and how we are competing in the global marketplace for our kids,” said Michelle Dawson, Senior Director of Innovation and Technology for Compton Unified School District.

CALSA is a community of diverse educational leaders skilled in addressing the needs of Latino/a students and dedicated to increasing the number of highly effective Latino/a administrators.
