STEAMFest Success: Thousands Attend CUSD Event

Media Release

The 4th Annual STEAMFest was a huge success on Thursday, June 1, attracting more than 7000 people to the Dollarhide Community Center in Compton to witness the amazing work of Compton Unified School District (CUSD) scholars. At the event, the students were showing their examples of sustainable energy technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, and renewable energy resources they had created in their classrooms throughout the year.

“This is our annual event to highlight what’s going on in Compton Unified School District,” said CUSD Superintendent Darren Brawley. “Our schools have a deep commitment to STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. Several years ago, we made a commitment to eliminate the opportunity gap for students in Compton, and to make sure we provided them with opportunities that would prepare them well beyond their academic careers here. This is our opportunity to highlight these things that are happening within Compton’s schools.”

All 30 CUSD schools exhibited at this year’s STEAMFest and more than 1,000 district scholars participated in the showcase of STEAM skills. The festivities also included the Early College High School marching band entertaining the crowd, an Innovation Hall featuring immersive technology such as AR/VR, a robotics showcase and challenge, Marvel super heroes walking the event and posing for pictures, Legos and Home Depot booths with interactive projects, and a lot more.

“As you can see, we’ve got a lot of great things happening in our schools,” said CUSD Board of Trustees President Charles Davis. “Tell your friends.”

Bragging rights were also on the line as the schools competed for the for the “Greenest” Booth award, judged by Raytheon employees. In the end, Clinton Elementary took the top booth award, followed by Whaley Middle School in second, and Carver Elementary in third. Compton Early College High School won the App Design contest, with Jefferson Elementary taking second place.

The competition didn’t end there, as Compton Unified Middle Schools squared off in the Rocket League STEAMFest eSports Tournament, with Whaley earning bragging rights this year.

“All I can say is wow!” said CUSD Board of Trustees Vice President Sandra Moss of STEAMFest. “Don’t we have some amazing children here in Compton?”

While awards were given out for the various competitions, everyone was a winner at STEAMFest. Students, families, teachers, faculty, and all attendees were treated to plenty of free food and free raffles, and got to see the incredible and innovative work that Compton Unified Scholars had been working on for months in their classrooms.

“I just want to give the students a congratulations,” said CUSD Board of Trustees member Dr. Aiyana Davis. “Every student who I spoke with was able to tell me step-by-step about their project in their booth. That shows the best practices from their

instructional teachers. I love the teachers. You are phenomenal. This is an example of closing the opportunity and knowledge gab is at its finest. This is access and equity.”

More than 50 exhibiting sponsors and partners, including Boeing, Raytheon, Coder Z, Grocery Outlet, Home Depot, and Pizza 120, were also on hand, supporting the students and local community.
