Compton Success Profiles: Montserrat Barrientos

Meet Montserrat Barrientos, Compton High School Class of 2023 graduate. She will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall, majoring in Political Science. She wants to become a criminal defense lawyer in the future and help low-income families like hers was when she was growing up.
She went to Bunche Elementary School starting in the fourth grade, then moved to Compton High School. She struggled in elementary school, because she was absent many days. But by eight grade she stopped missing school and did much better grade-wise.
Montserrat said that her teachers in high school created a safe and open environment for her and helped her with any issues she had in school or at home. In addition, she’s been inspired by her mom to work hard and do better in life.
“I value my education because with it I’ll unlock way more opportunities for myself,” she said. “It doesn’t only help me, but it’ll help all the others around me.”
