Compton Success Profiles: Joeangel Chavez

Media Release

Meet Joeangel Chavez, Compton High School Class of 2023 graduate. He will be attending Compton College in the fall, studying Photography.

“Photography fascinates me,” he said. “When I watch films, I want to replicate the same magic.”

Joeangel has attended Compton Unified schools since kindergarten. At an early age, he was diagnosed with autism, something that he’s learned to embrace. “One of my teachers said that autism is my superpower,” he explained. “For the individuals with autism, keep rising up, and hopefully you can overcome your challenges.”

The best thing about attending high school for Joeangel was the memories it gave him. He values his education because learning makes him feel good about himself. He says that if he went back in time to talk to his freshmen self, he’d tell him: “There’s nothing to be nervous about. You’ll make new friends and create great memories.”

Joeangel Chavez is another Compton Success Story.
